We recommend choosing a circuit of 10 km a day for novices, 15 km a day for intermediates and 20 km a day for experts. However, the distance can vary from day to day depending on the difficulties of the circuit.
You will probably make more distance on days where you don't have to make portages. Also, if the circuit is regularly maintained, you will be less likely slowed by fallen trees in portages or streams.
We recommend that you scout each rapid before proceeding. Only undertake those rapids that are within your skill level. If you have any doubt, you should portage. It is always easier to portage than to await rescue. The number of rapids specified for each circuit is for information only. The rapids specified here are ranked according to the international classification of rapids but it may vary considerably with changes in water levels. Obstructions such as a fallen tree across the rapids could increase the level of difficulty as well.
Another factor to consider, but unfortunately difficult to predict in advance, is the wind: large bodies of water might become more difficult to paddle. You will have to follow the shore, thus extending the distance covered, or to wait.
Finally, remember to take into consideration the travel time between Le Domaine and the put-in and put-out: the reserve is immense! The circuit number gives an idea of its location:
The detailed description of each circuit, sorted by length recommended, can be found in the section "Our circuits".
